Standards-based Learning for Mastery Learning in Physical Education and Sport

with Andrew Frapwell

Friday, 17 November 2017
Central London
Monday, 20 November 2017
Course Level:

Standards-based approaches are sometimes termed proficiency-based, competency-based, mastery-based, performance-based or outcome-based learning. These learning standards determine the objectives and outcomes of a unit or lesson, and teachers then determine how and what to teach pupils so they achieve the learning expectations outlined in the standards.

If pupils fail to meet expected learning standards, they typically receive additional instruction, practice time, and support to help them achieve the outcomes. The Independent Schools Inspectorate Handbook for the Inspection of Schools (2017) indicates that the inspection report will provide a summative evaluation for the quality of outcomes in terms of the pupils’ academic and other achievements, and in their personal development.  This seminar will cover:

·         What is a standards-based approach to physical education?

·         What does a standards-based approach to physical education involve?

·         Why is a standards-based approach gaining in popularity globally?

·         Why is a standards-based approach to assessment preferred to a standards-referenced approach?

·         How can a standards-based approach to assessment support pupil achievement?

·         What are the standards?

·         How can we evidence achievement against the standards for the Independent Schools Inspectorate?

·         What is the difference between performance targets and learning targets?

·         Why are both performance targets and learning targets important for learners?

·         What is Mastery learning?

·         How do we keep the administrative burden of assessment in PE to a minimum?

·         How does the Independent Schools Inspectorate evaluate the quality of outcomes for the pupils?
