    This is a course for teachers who are new to coaching and umpiring hockey, or who have not been involved in the school game for a few years. It provides an introduction to modern coaching techniques, as well as tactical considerations for team play. Coaches will become confident that they can develop individual players, in addition to preparing school teams for competition. Ten conditioned, training games are introduced, along with guidance on structuring school sessions for both the 7 and 11 a-side versions of the game.

    Umpiring content is aimed at making teachers confident to officiate in school games, typically at lower age and ability levels. The course includes everything for the novice coach to make a positive contribution to school Hockey.

    Coaching Content

    • Making Hockey fun
    • Basic practices for core skills
    • Developing key technical skills for inexperienced hockey players
    • Conditioned Games to enhance tactical understanding
    • Develop the principles of the Self Pass
    • Formations and Set Pieces for the 7 aside and 11 aside format of the game
    • 5 structured session plans

    Umpiring Content

    • An overview of all significant rules
    • Sympathetic officiating of lower age and ability levels
    • The differences between umpiring 7 aside and 11 aside format of the game
    • Playing advantage in junior Hockey
    • Communicating with players and spectators
    Prices

    1 Place £209 + VAT

    Course runs 10am to 3.30pm. Lunch and resources are included. Please note in the event of you needing to cancel a place on a course, we require 10 working days' notice.

    Matt Taylor

    Matt Taylor is the current head coach of Nottingham University, who won the BUCS championships in 2015 and 2022. He was previously head coach of Beeston HC in the Men’s Premier Division, winning three championships between 2010-2014. He has also helped developed 60+ junior players gain presentative honours for the National Age Squads as well as having coached 40+ senior Internationals. As a player Matt won seven Championship titles with Cannock HC.
